The following instructions will guide you through the use of PaginationPal 1.0 and give an excellent idea of the functionality of PaginationPal 1.0. While PaginationPal is extremely easy to use and hardly warrants a manual, you are advised to read the instructions to discover some of the not so apparent uses of PaginationPal.
This Demo Version has been prepared in the 680x0 version. To fully appreciate the full power of the Power Mac, you will need to order either the FAT or Power Mac version(s).

What does PaginationPal do?
PaginationPal is basically a two-fold application.
1) PaginationPal is a tool for building a single or two page layout for ads, small books, and/or catalogs in QuarkXPress. Use PaginationPal to create a template for QuarkXPress to set up bleeds, trims, spine widths, and shingling. PaginationPal can be used to produce templates for a number of other projects such as envelopes, letterheads, posters, and etc.
2) You can use PaginationPal to create a form that can be used to keep track of production stages, notes about production, create folding dummies, etc.
While both aspects of PaginationPal have their own features that are specific to one or the other, it should be kept in mind that some of the features will apply to both the form and the template making.
For the PageMaker user that has access to both Quark-XPress and PageMaker, you can use QuarkXPress¿ Converter, to convert any PaginationPal generated QuarkXPress document into a PageMaker document.
Getting Started:
Once PaginationPal has been launched, you will be presented with the basic form. It is recommended that you start by entering the following information:
Job number. You can do so by clicking to the right of the field with the words Job Number: or by tabbing to the field. You can edit the field Job Number, by clicking on the field that contains the words JobNumber:.
Customer name: Tab to or click on the field to the right of the field with word Customer:. Again, if you don╒t care for the heading Customer:, you can click in the field that contains the words Customer: to edit the field to whatever you desire.
Date: Under the menu Palette select Date. This will place the current date to the right of the Date field. If the current date is not the date that you want to display, you can edit the field to show whatever you desire. You can also edit the field Date.
Number of Pages: Select how many pages will be in your document by clicking and holding on the popup button next to the Number of Pages field. Select from the resulting menu. You can also edit the field Number of Pages. Important Note: You can add, subtract, and/or edit page names from the form by editing the fields that contain the page numbers. This documentation will refer to these fields as page fields for the rest of this documentation. Another Important Note: If you add pages to the book by entering the page number (or name) into an empty page field, it is important that you tab or click out of the page field before PaginationPal will recognize that the page exists. See ╥Using the Palette╙ for further modification of the page fields.
Select a font and font size: Select Font Palette from the Font-Change menu. You must use the font palette to select a font. The Font menu can only be used to change the font of an individual field. All of the menu items that appear under FontChange are on the Font Palette. Once a font has been selected, all text in all fields will be changed to that font. Be careful not to select a font that has a wide em space to avoid text not appearing in the fields. If that occurs, simply choose a smaller font size or choose a different font. Most fonts, however, will be displayed properly . Important Note: The font that you select will be used with any QuarkXPress document that you will be creating later, so give the font of your choice careful consideration. It is recommended that you choose a font that will be used in the document╒s layout. It is important to ensure that the font will be included with the files that are to accompany the document for output. If you change the font of an individual field, this will not have any bearing on the QuarkXPress document created with the Book dialog. However, the QuarkXPress document that you create with the Save to Quark (page 10) will carry that font with it. If you have elected to change the font, font size, or justification of any of the page fields, the Save to Quark feature will adhere to those settings in QuarkXPress.
Items on the Font Palette and under the FontChange menu:
Up: Shifts all of the text in all of the fields up and to the left. The selected font and the font size will determine what will work best for you.
Down: Shifts all of the text down and to the right.
Left: Shifts all of the text in the page fields to the left.
Center: Shifts all of the text in the page fields to the center.
Right: Shifts all of the text in the page fields to the right.
(Optional): Place the cursor in the center of any page field (with or without a page number). When the cursor is in the page field without the option or command key down, the cursor will be an I--beam. Click to edit the field. Once you press the command key the cursor will change to a hand. Click in the field to chage the justification of that page field. Each click will advance the ╥left, center, and right╙ cycle. Press the option key, click and hold. If the cursor changes to a ╥+╙, with the mouse still down, you can drag the page field to any location on the form. If the cursor changes to a ╥double arrow╙, clicking and dragging with the option key down from any corner or edge of the page field will snap the page fields to the grid as you resize the page fields. This is very useful if the form needs to show such things as form breakdowns, folding dummies, changing the order of production, shipping sequence, etc. Your imagination can dictate how you will use this feature. Please note the menu Grid. The grid can be used as an aid in placement of the page fields. Important Note: When QuarkXPress builds your book, it will strictly adhere to the order that was established before you moved the page fields. It will not build your book in the order that you rearranged the page fields. It is important to establish the order in which you want Quark to build your book before you move the page fields. Rearranging the page fields is strictly a cosmetic feature to make the form more functional to your individual needs. Bear in mind that you can also Save in Quark and further modify the form.
Using the palette:
The palette has been prepared in two different styles: horizonal and vertical. To toggle back and forth, click on the button in the upper left-hand corner of the palette.
All of the palette functions are accessible from the menu Palette with the exception of Page Setup and Print. These can be found under the File menu. The following instructions apply to the menu as well as to the palette.
Up Arrow: Click on this button to use the form in portrait view.
Right Arrow: Click on this button to use the form in landscape view. Special Tip: It is suggested that you decide on either the Portrait or Landscape orientation before you move or resize the page fields. If you have moved or resized any of the page fields and then change the orientation, PaginationPal will move the page fields to their default setting for the chosen orientation.
Hide Boxes: After you have selected the number of pages in your book, you will notice some empty page fields (unless you have chosen 120 pages for your book). You may or may not want those page fields to be visible. To be invisible, click on the Hide Boxes button on the palette.
Show Boxes: If you decided to hide the page fields and later discover that you want to use them, click on the Show Boxes button to bring the hidden page fields back into view.
Page 1 on Left: When you select the number of pages for you book, PaginationPal will generate the pagination in the page fields with the odd page numbers on the right. If your book has the odd page numbers on the left, you will need to click on the Page 1 on Left button on the palette. You will be asked if you want to show the book in reader or printer pairs. Your choice. Important Note: Suppose that you decide to add additional pages by entering the pages into the empty page fields. PaginationPal will ignore these pages when it performs the Page 1 on Left function. These pages will remain in the same page fields that they were entered. If you want these pages to be placed in the QuarkXPress document as a Page 1 on Left format, you will have to make those adjustments yourself.
Show Readers: When you select the number of pages for your book, PaginationPal generates the pages into printer spreads. Should you decide to have the pages displayed in reader spreads, click on the Show Readers button on the palette. You will be asked if you want page 1 on the left or the right. Your choice. Special Tip: If you want your book to have page 1 on the left and show readers, you can use the Show Readers button to get there without using the Page 1 on Left button.
Reset: If you elect Optional Step 6 under Using PaginationPal (moving and resizing the page fields) and want to revert back to the initial look of the form (in columns), click on the Reset button. Important Note: All of the page fields will return to their default setting. The font attributes of each page field will be re-established to the settings described by the Font Palette. The Reset button will not reset just the page field that you moved or resized.

Save in Quark: DEMO NOTE: The Save in Quark feature has be severly limited in the Demo version. It will do all that the full version will do, only it will recreate only 4 pages of the PaginationPal pages in Quark. When the form appears as you want, you can choose to print (see 10 and 11 below). You can also recreate the form in Quark. When you click on the Save in Quark button, QuarkXPress will launch and recreate the document with all of the elements in a relative position. Once in QuarkXpress, you can use and/or change the objects to suit your own special needs. Special Tip: This process is not instantaneous. It will take a few minutes depending upon the speed of your Mac. The number of page fields will also be a determining factor. If you will not be using the empty page fields in the QuarkXPress document, it is suggested that you click on the Hide Boxes button on the palette. If you don╒t, all of the page fields will be reproduced at the expense of additional time. PaginationPal will beep twice when QuarkXPress is finished. QuarkXPress will also perform faster if you do not have the measurements palette showing.
Page Setup: DEMO NOTE: The printing feature of the Demo version of PaginationPal has been disabled. If you elect to use the document as prepared by PaginationPal, it is adviseable to click on the Page Setup button. You will be asked if you selected the proper chooser. The main thing to consider in the page setup is the orientation of the document.
Print: DEMO NOTE: The printing feature of the Demo version of PaginationPal has been disabled. You will be asked if you checked the page setup. Because you have the option to change your document from landscape to portrait at will in PaginationPal, you will need to check the page setup each time you print the document. Only the pertinent elements of the page will print.
Book: The Book button will produce a dialog box where you will be able to configure how your Quark document will look. See the section on Using the Book Dialog for instructions.
Marks: DEMO NOTE: You will only be able to select 1 of the Marks offered. This button will produce another dialog that you can use to select the style of marks that PaginationPal will use to create your template. Click on any of the six styles that you prefer.
Using the Book Dialog:
Bleed Configuration: DEMO NOTE: The Demo Version will only allow you to set up a bleed of 3/8" (.375). Purchasing PaginationPal will allow you to enjoy the full range of functionality described below. You have the option to set the bleed specification of all sides of your document independently. You can do so in two ways. A) Click on or tab to the desired field and enter the figure. B) Click and hold on the popup button. Your choices are in multiples of 1/16 of an inch or you can enter in whatever value you desire by selecting the Other... option. Important Note: PaginationPal will not let you enter a negative value nor will it let you enter a value larger than 1/2 inch. Due to the fact that QuarkXPress has a 48 inch maximum page size, it was necessary to place some limits in the bleed configuration.
Page Dimensions: DEMO NOTE: The Demo Version will only allow you to set up a page size of 7" wide by 10.5" tall. Purchasing PaginationPal will allow you to enjoy the full range of functionality described below. You can enter the page size in two ways. A) Click or tab to the desired field and enter the figure. B) Click and hold on the popup button. The page dimensions popups work differently than the Bleed Configuration. When you choose the Other... option from the popup button and have entered your value, PaginationPal will add that value to the popup menu. This will enable you to enter your most commonly used values without having to enter the value by hand. PagingationPal will accept up to 10 values. After that, the value on the bottom of the list will roll-off and will have to be re-entered. Again restrictions have been implemented because of the limitation by Quark on the page size. The page width limits will be determined by the settings for Spread Instructions. For Create Single Page, the limit will be 43 inches, and for Create 2 Pages, the limit will be 22 inches.
Spine Option: When you select Book has Spine, you will be able to enter a value that will determine if QuarkXPress will build a spine on a 2 page spread. If you have selected Create Single Page, this option will not be available. You can enter the spine value in two ways. A) Click or tab to the field and enter the figure. B) Click and hold on the popup button. The popup works the same as the bleed popup. Values are in increments of 1/16" from 1/16 to 2 inches.
Spread Instructions: Create Single Page will build your layout as a single page and will build 1 single page for each page specified as described with number 4 under Setting up PaginationPal. Spine Option and the Shingle Option are not available for Create Single Page. Create 2 Pages will build your layout as a 2- page spread. If you have opted for the book to be in Reader spreads, the Shingle Option will not be available. Special Tip: If you are building your book with the Create Single Page option, it is recommended that you arrange your book in Show Readers from the palette. If you don╒t, QuarkXPress will not build your book in consecutive order.
Optional Objects:
Include Bleed Box: Will build a picture box from bleed to bleed, from left to right and top to bottom for Create Single Page. For Create 2 Pages, a picture box will be built from the bleed to the center of the book on each page. If you selected the Book has Spine, PaginationPal will also create a picture box defining the spine area from bleed top to bleed bottom.
Include Trim Box: The selection of the Include Trim Box has the same definition as Include Bleed Box, except that the picture box will be built with the trims as the defining boundaries.
Show Bleed Marks: PaginationPal will automatically incorporate trim marks and center marks on you document. To show the bleed marks as well, select Show Bleed Marks.
Common Page Info: PaginationPal will automatically insert either A) the job number and the customer name into the text field under Common Page Info, or B) whatever was saved from past configuration for this setup (more later in the documentation about saving settings). If you select Common Page Info, the text field will be enabled for entry of text. The text that is entered in this field will be displayed below the bottom left trim mark on your document. To eliminate the job number and/or the customer name on your document, simply delete the supplied information and enter the information that you want. This information will be saved when you click on Done (see Done below).
Guide Option: PaginationPal will add guides at the location of any of the selected check boxes. Important Note: The guides are added after the entire book is built. When QuarkXPress adds the guides, there will be a redraw of the screen for every guide added times the number of pages built. The more pages and guides you add determines how much your monitor will ╥flash╙ as your guides are being added.
Shingle Option: PaginationPal will add another mark on the top and bottom to show shingling information when the book gets bound. This is determined by the thickness of the paper. Consult your paper supplier for the thickness of the stock that you will be using to print your document. There is a liberal tolerance (from 0 to .05 inches), however, the majority of stock will fall from .0025 to .008 inches. The popup button allows you to select how often the shingle will be adjusted. For instance: If you choose Every Fourth Page and a thickness of .003, PaginationPal will add the single mark on the fifth page .006 inches from the trim mark toward the center of the book. The sixth, seventh, and eighth pages will have the single mark in the same spot. The ninth page will have a shingle mark .012 from the trim, etc. It should be noted that the marks will also appear on the corresponding ╥printer╙ mate.
Marks: DEMO NOTE: You will only be able to select 1 of the Marks offered. Added to the Book Dialog so that you can change your marks preference just before the book is created.
Cancel: The Cancel button simply closes the window. None of the settings will be saved.
Done: When you click on the Done button, all of your settings will be saved and a dialog will ask you if you want to create your book in Quark. If you select Yes, QuarkXPress will launch and build your document as you have specified. The time PaginationPal takes to build your document will be determined by how many optional objects you selected and how many pages will be built. Exercise some patience. When PaginationPal is done, it will beep twice. Special Tip: To help speed-up the building of the book, you can close the Measurements palette of Quark. If you have the Document Layout window open, you will be able to see the progression of book building. New pages will appear in the window as they are added. Double-click on the page immediately after it appears to watch it╒s construction.
Menu Items Not Already Mentioned:
File Menu:
New Setting: Selecting New Setting wipes the slate clean. PaginationPal needs at least 1 page in order to work properly. You will notice that 1 is the number of pages selected. You can generate new numbers by using the Number of pages popup.
Save Setting: After you have configured your book ( including the Book Dialog), you can save your settings. It would be best to do this after you have QuarkXPress build your book and you are satisfied with the results. When you select Save Settings, PaginationPal will write a text file containing all of the vital information about your book. You will be asked where you want to save this file. A folder named Settings has been supplied with PaginationPal to store the settings. However, you are free to store the file whenever you please.
Open Setting: Once you have saved a setting, you now have the option to recall it. PaginationPal will restore all objects (including book dialog settings) of the selected setting.
Delete Setting: You will be asked what setting you want to delete. Caution: Once a file (only text files will be eligible for deletion) has been selected for deletion...it is gone. You will be informed twice of what is about to happen, so an accidental deletion is unlikely. Do be careful, however.
Edit Menu: All of the Edit menu options are standard undo, cut, copy, and paste, functions. Special Note: Undo will only work for text objects. It does not work for the Reset function or the moving and resizing of the page fields.
Fonts Menu: You can change the font of any given field by highlighting text in an individual field and making a choice in the Fonts menu. If you do this, that font will be how the document will be displayed and printed if you use PaginationPal╒s printing. Important Note: If you Save in Quark, the font that is used for the first word or number in any field in PaginationPal will be assigned to the entire text box in QuarkXPress.
Styles Menu: You can use the font sizes to assign a new font size to any given field. You might find this useful if you are moving and resizing the ╥page field╙.
Possible Problems:
Problem A: Nothing happens when I click on the done button on the book dialog or when I click on the Save in Quark button on the palette.
Solution A: Verify that AppleScript 1.0 or later is loaded at startup (must be in the extensions folder of the system folder) and make sure that your version of QuarkXPress is 3.2 or later.
Problem B: QuarkXPress starts to build the book or form and does not finish.
Solution B: PaginationPal has taken every precaution to assure that before anything is done in QuarkXPress, that all fonts are loaded. If one slips through the cracks, QuarkXPress will stop when it doesn╒t know what to do. Go back to PaginationPal, re-assign your fonts and try again. There is also the possiblity that there is an XTension of QuarkXPress that is interfering with the production of your book. If that is the case, then you will need to remove the XTension from your XTension folder. If you are sharing QuarkXPress with another machine over a network, and you have file sharing on, QuarkXPress will launch but stop before starting to build your book. You will need to quit QuarkXPress, select the chooser from the Apple menu, and disable yourself from the network.
